Understanding Behavior: Support Services for Developmental Disabilities

ree

If you’ve ever supported someone with challenging behaviors—especially an individual with intellectual or developmental disabilities—you’ve probably heard the term "Positive Behavior Support Plan" (or PBSP). But what exactly is a PBSP, and more importantly, how can it help?

At its core, a Positive Behavior Support Plan is a personalized guide that outlines why a behavior is happening and what strategies can support change in a safe, respectful, and meaningful way. It’s not about control or punishment. It’s about understanding, supporting, and creating real opportunities for growth.

What’s Inside a Positive Behavior Support Plan?

A well-written BSP includes:

  • A clear description of the behavior we want to reduce or replace

  • An analysis of what triggers the behavior (called antecedents) and what follows it (the consequences)

  • The function of the behavior—what need is it meeting?

  • Proactive supports to reduce the chance that the behavior will happen in the first place

  • Replacement skills (called Functional Alternative Behaviors) that help the individual meet their needs in more helpful or adaptive ways

  • Reactive strategies that tell caregivers what to do (and not do) when the behavior happens

Why Do They Matter?

For individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, borderline personality disorder, or other mental health issues, behaviors are often a form of communication. A PBSP helps us decode that communication and respond in ways that are supportive rather than reactive.

When implemented consistently, behavior support plans can:

- Reduce challenging or unsafe behaviors

- Teach new, more effective coping or communication skills

- Improve relationships between the individual and their support team

- Create more predictable, stable environments

- Reduce burnout and confusion among caregivers and staff

- Lead to more independence, self-determination, and dignity for the individual

More Than a Document

A good PBSP isn’t just a binder that sits on a shelf. It’s a living, breathing tool—built on trust, collaboration, and respect. It works best when the people who use it believe in it and are trained to implement it with consistency and care.

At Sora Connect, we design behavior support plans that are practical, person-centered, and trauma-informed. We don’t just ask, “How do we stop this behavior?"—we ask, “What does this person need, and how can we help them succeed?”

Because when we start with compassion, we don’t just change behavior—we change lives.
